Winston-Salem, NC – Patrick “9th Wonder” Douthit is being recognized for his revered music catalog by being inducted into North Carolina’s Music Hall Fame.
The North Carolina native has worked with a range esteemed artist such as JAY-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce, Nipsey Hussle, Chris Brown, and many more during a career that has spanned three decades.
While attending N.C. Central University, the hall fame inductee, spearheaded well-regarded Hip Hop trio, Little Brother. The group’s success and credibility cultivated Douthit’s production career, and the rest is history.
“It means more to me that the culture is represented than that a I’m being recognized,” Douthit said in an interview with the Winston-Salem Journal. “It’s something that can be recognized in our state history.”
9th continues, “Some us can walk into museums and not relate to what’s there, but, now, if a kid who is making beats on his laptop walks into the N.C. Music Hall Fame Museum and sees my picture, then he can say, ‘Maybe I can do that.’”
The super-producer recalled how different the times were when he started producing, and how his production style became a staple in the industry.
“In the ’80s and ’90s, hip-hop artists made beats in the studio using hardware. The way I started was on a laptop, making beats in my bedroom — using stware. At the time, it was unheard to use that platform. Now that’s the norm,” he concludes.
The ceremony will be held in October; the class will also include Big Daddy Kane, Mitch Easter, Merle Watson, and Elizabeth Cotton.
