The scorer’s sheet is a piece NBA history.
Wilt Chamberlain is one the best scorers in NBA history and was also one the most dominant players the entire 1960. On March 2nd, 1962, Wilt went down in NBA history as the first and last player to record 100 points in an NBA game. Chamberlain’s Philadelphia Warriors were taking on the New York Knicks in Hershey that night and no one could believe what they had seen. Some still like to dispute the validity Chamberlain’s 100 points but considering there is a score sheet associated with it, it’s hard to argue the game’s authenticity.
Recently, the scorer’s sheet from that game was put up for auction. The piece is signed by Wilt himself and according to TMZ, it sold over the weekend for $214,579. Originally, appraisers were predicting that it would sell for close to $100K.
“This scoresheet, with such well-documented provenance, may be the most important, authentic piece that collectors ever have a chance to acquire,” SCP Auctions Director Brendan Wells explained. “It certainly got the price it deserves.”
To this day, current and former NBA players still talk about Chamberlain’s 100-point game as it came before the three-point shot was ushered into the sport. The closest anyone has come to 100 points since then was Kobe Bryant who scored 81 against the Toronto Raptors back in 2006.
