Russell Wilson "Wants New York," Says Chiefs’ Tyrann Mathieu

“Russ wants New York.”

Russell Wilson may not be playing for the Seattle Seahawks much longer if the team does not give him the contract extension he desires by the midnight deadline that he imposed. If Wilson’s time in Seattle does come to an end, there are rumors that he – and wife, Ciara – are most interested in New York.

In fact, Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu has flat out said, “Russ wants New York.”

In February, Fox Sports 1’s Colin Cowherd outlined five reasons why a Wilson-Giants move would make sense, including his belief that Ciara prefers to live in New York over Seattle.

“Russell Wilson’s wife is Ciara. She’s a singer and an entertainer,” Cowherd said. “She would prefer to live in New York, and the Giants need a quarterback, and there’s nobody in the Draft they love. A lot things add up. Last year Russell Wilson’s contract. His wife would prefer New York. Seattle is not an entertainment mecca…Also, Russell Wilson, good-looking guy, classy guy, incredibly marketable, and kinda buried in the Pacific Northwest.”

Wilson doesn’t plan to sign a contract extension with the Seahawks this season if an agreement is not reached by midnight Monday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The 30-year old QB is set to become a free agent after this season and Schefter notes that sources believe “it will be a challenge to get a new deal done” before tonight’s deadline.

Wilson and the Seahawks agreed on a four-year, $87.6 million deal in 2015, but he now ranks 12th in terms annual average salary among quarterbacks, according to ESPN.

There’s a strong chance the Seahawks will slap the franchise tag on Wilson next Summer, or even look to trade him. However, ESPN reports, “there are no obvious teams willing to surrender draft picks or pay Wilson what he is seeking.”
