Los Angeles, CA – Despite Juice WRLD’s sudden death, Yellowcard still wants their cut the late rapper’s breakout hit “Lucid Dreams.” According to court documents obtained by XXL, the $15 million lawsuit, which was previously put on hold following Juice’s death, will now push forward.
On Tuesday (December 17), the punk rock band filed a motion extending the amount time that Juice WRLD’s representatives, co-defendants Nick Mira and Taz Taylor, and labels Grade A Productions and Interscope Records have to respond to the complaint filed against them. The initial deadline had been set for December 9, the day after Juice died, but has now been moved to February 4, 2020.
The suit stems from Juice’s multi-platinum single, “Lucid Dreams,” which Yellowcard members claim illegally samples elements their 2006 song “Holly Wood Died.” Following Juice’s death, Yellowcard’s attorney Richard Busch told Digital Music News the band would pause the suit while “digesting” the news.
Taking the opposite route, Sting denied he ever sued the late artist over “Lucid Dreams” despite claims suggesting otherwise in the wake Juice’s death.
“‘Lucid Dreams’ was my favorite all the many interpolations ‘Shape My Heart,’ it will resonate for many years to come. My sincere condolences to the family,” the rock icon told Billboard, adding that rumors him suing over the sample were “simply untrue.”
Juice suffered a seizure at the Chicago Midway International Airport on December 8. He reportedly took several Percocet pills in an attempt to hide them from law enforcement. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
