New Music: A$AP Ferg feat. A$AP Rocky ‘Pups’

Where my dogs at? A$AP Ferg links with A$AP Rocky on “Pups,” his first new single since 2017.

The A$AP Mob rappers pay homage to DMX on the menacing Frankie P production, which samples the hip-hop legend’s “Get at Me Dog” from his 1998 debut It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot.

“Me being a DMX fan since day one, all the way back to Trap Lord, my first album cover was inspired by DMX,” Ferg told Ebro Darden on Beats 1. “And we did that song actually before X got out jail. I didn’t even know he was getting out, a week after we did that song. So it was like paying homage to him. My boy Frankie P worked on the beat, he reworked it. Added some 808s and we just brought it up to date.”

Ferg is now readying his new EP Concrete Chandeliers, his first project since 2017’s Still Striving, and has been in the studio with Pharrell.

“The project is about being from the hood, but having a intellectual mindset and going out and getting elegant things and doing elegant projects,” he explained. “Me, Valentino deals, and doing Adidas deals and being a face for Tiffany’s. It’s showing the elevation a African-American young man. And beyond that, it’s just more a mindset you could be from any hood, you could be from a trailer park and be down in the trap, but you could become the Lord anything. So that’s where the whole Trap Lord juxtaposition Concrete Chandeliers, Hood Pope, that’s where all those things. It’s the enlightenment after the darkness.”
