Eminem Celebrates 12 Years of Sobriety

Eminem is still in recovery.

On Monday, the “Rap God” took to Twitter to celebrate his 12 years sobriety, proudly sharing a photo his AA medallion. “Clean dozen, in the books! I’m not afraid,” tweeted the “Godzilla” rapper.

His close friend and collaborator Royce da 5’9″, who’s struggled with substance abuse himself, also praised his friend for remaining sober. “And counting…. Proud my brother,” he added along with a photo Em holding his AA chip.

Royce credits his Bad Meets Evil partner-in-rhyme for helping him stay sober. “Before I even decided to stop drinking. He was like, ‘If you ever feel like you got a problem, you know you can call me, right?’” the Detroit MC told Rap-Up in a 2018 interview. “It kind bothered me for awhile, because I didn’t know if he was saying that he felt like I had a problem. What was he saying? But I felt like that was cool him as a friend to try to take that step with me.”

In 2012, Em staged an intervention and got Royce the help he needed. “When I went home, he put me in this hospital with this doctor and I got some the best sleep that I got in a long time,” he added. “He linked me up with my therapist, who is still my therapist today, and my sponsor today. I haven’t had a drink since. That was six years ago.”

Em opened up about his sobriety during a 2017 interview with Elton John for Interview magazine. “Getting clean made me grow up. I feel like all the years that I was using, I wasn’t growing as a person,” he said.
