Conor McGregor stunned the UFC and MMA during the early stages Tuesday morning by taking to Twitter to announce his retirement from Mixed Martial Arts. McGregor most recently lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October and hasn’t fought since. Many believed he would take on Cowboy Cerrone in his next fight, but McGregor seemed apprehensive about signing a deal. Perhaps his feelings wanting to retire are why he never tried to finalize a fight.
“Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as “Mixed Martial Art” today,” McGregor wrote. “I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition. I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement. Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!”
McGregor has already started his own Proper No. Twelve whiskey business which has become quite successful over the last year. The now-former UFC champion even went on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon last night to sing and drink at an Irish Pub.
While McGregor says he is retiring, there’s a chance he could still come out retirement to fight again. At only 30 years old, McGregor still has a lot time left to continue to be a great fighter. Although, for now, we’ll have to learn to live without him in the Octagon.
