R.I.P. Mister Cee.
Legendary New York DJ pioneer Mister Cee has passed away. He was 57.
The tragic news was confirmed Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 10) by Skip Dillard, the brand manager at WXBK 94.7 The Block NYC, where Mister Cee had a show. No cause of death has been confirmed.
Born Calvin Lebrun in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant, Mister Cee, also known as “The Finisher” is best known for his time at New York radio station Hot 97 where he DJ’d for 20 years before leaving in 2014.
In the the late ’80s, Mister Cee DJ’d for rapper Big Daddy Kane. He also appeared on “Mister Cee’s Master Plan” from Kane’s 1988 debut album, Long Live The Kane. Mister Cee also helped introduce rap legend The Notorious B.I.G. to the world. He also served as the executive producer on the late rapper’s classic debut, Ready To Die in 1994.
“As a family at HOT 97 and WBLS, we’re deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved Mister Cee,” Hot 97 said in a statement on Wednesday. “He wasn’t just a DJ; he was a pillar of our stations, bringing joy to countless listeners with his legendary Throwback at Noon and Friday Night Live sets.”
“Mr. Cee’s influence stretched far beyond the airwaves, shaping the very fabric of NYC’s DJ culture. Our hearts are heavy as we send our love and condolences to his family and the fans whose lives he touched through his music. Rest easy, Mr. Cee. Your legacy will live forever.”
