Miley Cyrus is apologizing for fensive comments she made about hip-hop.
The pop superstar stirred controversy when she told Billboard in 2017 that she was no longer a fan the genre because some its lyrics about sex, cars, and jewelry.
“I can’t listen to that anymore,” said Cyrus, who was promoting her country-inspired album Younger Now. “That’s what pushed me out the hip-hop scene a little. It was too much, ‘Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my cock’ — I am so not that.”
At the time, fans were quick to point out that Cyrus had incorporated some the elements she criticized into her 2013 album Bangerz, which was executive produced by Mike WiLL Made-It and featured Future, Big Sean, Ludacris, and French Montana.
However, the comments still haunt her. YouTube user Kenya Wilson recently expressed her hurt over Cyrus’ words in a video she uploaded to her channel titled “Miley Cyrus Is My Problematic Fav…Sorry.”
“It wasn’t the right thing to say, it was bad, it was racially insensitive,” Wilson said about the 2017 interview. “It had racist undertones and it wasn’t OK, point blank, period.”
The video prompted a response from Cyrus, who apologized for her past criticism hip-hop. “Just watched your video. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak up. Being silent is not like me at all. I am aware my platform and have always used it the best way I know how and to shine a light on injustice,” she said. “I want to start with saying I am sorry. I own the fact that saying … ‘This pushed me out the hip hop scene a little’ was insensitive as it is a privilege to have the ability to dip in and out ‘the scene.’”
“There are decades inequality that I am aware , but still have a lot to] learn about,” she added. “Silence is apart the problem and I refuse to be quiet anymore. My words became a divider in a time where togetherness and unity is crucial. I can not change what I said at that time, but I can say I am deeply sorry for the disconnect my words caused. Simply said; I fu**ed up and I sincerely apologize. I’m committed to using my voice for healing, change, and standing up for what’s right.”
Cyrus’ latest project, SHE IS COMING, also features hip-hop collaborators including Mike WiLL, Swae Lee, and Ghostface Killah.
