The stars show out for the biggest night in fashion.
It’s that time the year for the 2019 Met Gala. On the first Monday every May, Vogue brings out the biggest stars in the world to the annual fashion exhibit. As you could expect, everyone’s out in their flashiest outfits that tie in with the event’s theme. This year, the event’s co-chairs include Lady Gaga, who arrived in a pink outfit before stripping down to her bra and panties, Serena Williams, former One Direction member Harry Styles, and creative director Gucci, Alessandro Michele. Gucci is actually sponsoring tonight’s event.
Among those who strolled through the Red Carpet were Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, 21 Savage, French Montana, Frank Ocean, Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, Janelle Monae, Kris Jenner, Cory Gamble, Yara Shahidi, Tiffany Hadish, Anderson .Paak, Lee Daniels, Billy Porter (who rolled up quite extravagantly), Omari Hardwick and many more.
The theme this year for Met Gala is “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” which is inspired by writer Susan Sontag’s seminal essay, “Notes on Camp.” Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge the Costume Institute, explained the concept to the New York Times last year.
“We are going through an extreme camp moment, and it felt very relevant to the cultural conversation to look at what is ten dismissed as empty frivolity but can be actually a very sophisticated and powerful political tool, especially for marginalized cultures,” he said. “One my favorite definitions from Susan’s essay is when she talks about the idea camp as failed seriousness. When it is ‘campy,’ it is more self-conscious, but we are going to look at both.”
