Former bassist and founding member of Bon Jovi, Alec John Such is dead at 70.
Bon Jovi announced the death of Alec John Such via social media over the weekend. Such served as the band’s bassist from 1983 to 1994. The announcement did not provide the details surrounding Such’s death.
“We are heartbroken to hear the news of the passing of our dear friend Alec John Such,” Bon Jovi wrote in their post on Twitter. “As a founding member of Bon Jovi, Alec was integral to the formation of the band,” the statement continues.
“To be honest, we found our way to each other through him. He was a childhood friend of Tico and brought Richie to see us perform. Alec was always wild and full of life. Today those special memories bring a smile to my face and a tear to my eye. We’ll miss him dearly,” Bon Jovi writes.
Alec John Such was born in Yonkers, New York and thrived in the New Jersey music scene that spawned Bon Jovi. He managed the Hunka Bunka Ballroom in Sayreville, New Jersey and booked Bon Jovi & the Wild Ones before joining the band himself as bassist. Alec John Such played throughout the group’s fame in the ’80s, but Such departed the band in 1994. Such was soon to be replaced by bassist Hugh McDonald. He later rejoined the band for its induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
“When Jon Bon Jovi called me up and asked me to be in his band many years ago, I soon realized how serious he was and he had a vision that he wanted to bring us to,” Such said at the induction ceremony. “And I am only too happy to have been a part of that vision.” Bon Jovi was formed in New Jersey in 1983 and created hits like “Livin’ On a Prayer” and “Wanted Dead or Alive.”
