Georgia's Fulton County commission chairman and Atlanta mayoral candidate John Eaves called for police to launch a criminal investigation Friday (Aug. 11) into R. Kelly and recent claims that the singer is holding women against their will in a “cult.”
“I am asking district attorney Paul Howard and his investigative ficers and prosecutors to fully review the report the John Creek Police and follow every lead — no matter where it leads, or who it implicates, and bring those persons to swift justice,” Eaves said in a statement.
“We will not allow our young girls and young women to be preyed upon by predators or anyone who aims to brainwash and strip them their human dignity and their right to be free,” he continued.
Friday afternoon, however, Howard released a statement that his fice is not currently investigating R. Kelly, though it is in possession a file on Kelly received from the city’s police department.
The allegations against Kelly stem from an investigative report published by BuzzFeed in July that implicated Kelly for allegedly holding several young women captive in an abusive sex “cult” at his properties in Chicago and Atlanta, where he supposedly dictates all aspects their lives. Kelly has denied the allegations, and one woman living with him, Joycelyn Savage, has issued a video statement insisting she is safe and “in a happy place.”
R. Kelly's team issued the following statement Friday: “Mr. Kelly is outraged by the ongoing efforts the Fulton County Board Commissions and its chairman to interfere with his business interests and now, absent any authority, attempt to have him targeted for investigation. The Board made it clear last week that they wish to prevent Mr. Kelly’s Atlanta-area concert, though they do not have the authority to do so and are contractually obligated to honor their own agreements. Now, today, the Board’s chairman tries again to interfere with the concert and assist others in that effort by calling for an investigation based on a supposed file — the contents which he has not even seen, and after proper authorities already stated just last week that they looked into the allegations and launched no investigation. The allegations against Mr. Kelly are false and ill-motived.”
