Big Sean is bringing a luxurious multiplex to Detroit. On Wednesday (Feb. 28), the rapper announced plans for a state–the-art theater, meant to inspire kids in the Motor City.
During a press conference, the hometown hero revealed that he is partnering with Troy’s Emagine Entertainment in order to bring this vision to life, according to the Detroit Free Press.
“Right now, as the city is in a complete renaissance, turning around and booming,” he said. “I think this is a perfect time to bring a theater to the city Detroit.”
The team is currently scouting various locations for the 10-12 screen theater, which is set to open in 2020. It will be called the Sean Anderson Theatre and Sean hopes that it turns into much more than just an entertainment destination.
“We want to do something revolutionary with it,” he explained. “We don’t want to just make it a movie theater, traditionally. We also want it to be a hub for entertainment for the whole community. We want people to have an incentive to go the extra miles, to travel into Detroit.”
Sean’s giving doesn’t end there. After joining forces with Eminem on “No Favors,” the rhyming duo teamed up once again. This time, their foundations joined The Ford Fund, the Detroit Lions, the Detroit Free Press, Jemele Hill, and Rochelle Riley to help 900 kids see Black Panther in the D.
Sean was on-hand for a screening the film at Emagine Royal Oak, where the press conference was also held. “I just think it’s important for…all kids to see black super heroes,” he said at the event. “That’s what they are. That’s something we rarely get to see. I’m not trying to make it a race thing. I’m keeping it real, though. It’s important to look up and see all colors people being superheroes and I think Black Panther is extraordinary. It’s one my favorite movies I’ve ever seen.”
